Delivery Driver Job Description and Duties

Delivery drivers spend a lot of time on the roads due to the precipitous nature of the work require it. Their responsibilities includes transporting goods from a place to another by driving a delivery vehicle. Delivery drivers may drive trucks or vans relate to the nature of their job; companies that need to transport bigger items usually use trucks while fans are widely used to deliver items which are not too large.

To work as a delivery driver, one must possess a perfect driving record. Because you are in charge of the security and timely delivery of items, you should be careful and diligent. Diverse delivery drivers work with courier companies which are along with the selection of employers who hire delivery drivers. Other businesses may include manufacturing firms and large retail stores that require considerable item to be made to their customers.

It is necessary for delivery drivers in order to utilize technology to plot routes so that timely deliveries can be made. Knowledge of local and interstate routes is also a prerequisite for this position. Some more duties of a delivery driver include:

• Assist in loading and unloading vehicle with items to be delivered

• Ensure that items are properly stacked and secured inside the delivery vehicle

• Take delivery instructions from supervisors

• Chart out appropriate route for delivery regarding the map or GPS

• Maintain proper knowledge of loaded items

• Ensure that appropriate and complete documentation is available at the time of loading

• Drive vehicle to the level of delivery by utilizing the greatest possible route

• Make sure that speed limits are adhered to in order to ward off possible misadventures

• Make sure the vehicle’s paperwork is in order

• Assist in unloading items from the vehicle in a secure manner

• Make sure delivery receipts are signed

• Collect payments for deliveries made and tend change

• Fill in pertinent information such as mileage and delivery time in company provided log books

• Check vehicle for possible wear and tear

• Make sure both general and preventative maintenance measures are performed in the vehicle

• Change vehicle fluids on a frequent basis

• Clean vehicle from the inside and the outside

• Perform diagnosis and troubleshooting activities on vehicle when needed

• Make sure the delivery schedule is followed

• Handle invoice discrepancies by informing superiors of problems and complaints
